Walk 1 - Tinners Way and Coast Path

This circular walk takes you up the hill, out of St Ives into the countryside along The Tinners Way , down to the Coast Path then back into town.

A fairly gentle stroll around the countryside surrounding St Ives.

A good after lunch walk or a way of familiarising yourself with the area.

Stage 1

Start at Grid Reference: SW518405

From St Ives Parish Church walk up High Street past Boots the Chemist on the left and The Queens Hotel on the right.

At the junction continue uphill straight on up Bedford Road. Near to the top turn right up Windsor Hill, which is very steep !

At the top turn left and continue uphill along Ventnor Terrace.

On the right is Ayr Stores, your last chance to stock up on snacks and drinks before the end of the walk.

Continue past Ayr Holiday Park as the road bends sharply to the left then back to the right. Keep going up the hill until you reach Burthallan Lane on the right.

Stage 2

Turn right along the lane and continue past The Garrack Hotel, then emerge into the countryside with fields to the left and the sea to your right.

Keep going straight on, past the track signposted for Venton Vision Farm.

Continue until you reach a sharp bend to the left, with a white painted cottage in front of you.

Stage 3

Cross the stone stile to your left onto a narrow path signposted Trevail, Gurnards Head, Zennor.

Follow the path between two hedges before emerging into an open field.

Continue ahead with the hedge (and sea) to your right, up a gentle slope, to another stile tucked into the corner of the field.

Cross this, then another stile a short distance ahead.

Look back at this point to enjoy the beautiful views over St Ives Bay to Godrevy Lighthouse.

Stage 4

The path continues due West, waymarked.

Eventually you reach a farm gate with a stile to the right, which leads onto a farm track running North South.

Gentle Uphill

  Stage 5

Turn right down the track towards the sea.

Come to a gate across the path, with farm gates into fields either side. Carry straight on through the gate, as the track narrows down to a path.

Follow the path down towards the sea as lovely views of St Ives Bay open up in front of you.

Emerge onto the main South West Coast Path.

  Stage 6

Turn right onto the coast path heading East back towards St Ives, past the National Trust sign "Hellesveor Cliff".

Follow the rather rocky path heading downhill towards the cliffs, emerging at the eastern end of Hellesveor.

Don't forget to enjoy the spectacular views over the bay.

  Stage 7

Continue eastwards along the coast path. Take some time to explore the ruined cottage on your left.

You will reach a way post at a crossroads with paths ahead, right up the hill and left. Bear left down the hill onto Burthallan Cliff, where there is a bench to rest on and enjoy the views.

  Stage 8

Continue following the path downhill across open grass towards St Ives.

Keep on the coast path through a gap in a stone wall and through a gate.

A short uphill stretch follows, until you emerge onto Carrick Du headland at the Western end of Porthmeor Beach.

Downhill / Uphill

  Stage 9

Follow the surfaced path across the headland and past St Ives Bowling Club. Continue along the road past Tate St Ives.

Turn right into a narrow lane - The Digey. Follow this down to the end and turn right onto Fore Street.

Continue along to the end of Fore Street to finish the walk where you started at St Ives Parish Church.
